So Ugly It’s Cute

Meritalia Colorado Sofa

Meritalia Colorado Sofa

Can you believe this is a sectional sofa? The first time I saw this image, I burst out laughing. I knew I was looking at the world’s ugliest sofa. I captured the image on my computer just to get a giggle out of it now and then.

But something unexpected happened. As the photo rotated in and out of my Google gadget bar, I began to fall in love with it. In fact, there’s so many things I now love about it, I hardly know where to begin!

It’s not just the great mix of colors, the curvature of the back, or the wonderful variation in size of each piece . I love the welcoming plumpness of the cushions. I can’t imagine sitting on this sofa without a bowl of popcorn, curled up watching yet another episode of Prime Suspect. How many sofas give you a feeling like that? And from a picture!!

I also love the message sent by a piece of furniture like this: that it’s ok to mix colors and sizes as long as you have one unifying factor throughout (in this case, those plump cushions!) This sofa would work beautifully with a big square ottoman or an acrylic coffee table or even a wood one. Bring on the wrought iron floor lamps or even a pharmacy lamp with a sofa table. The possibilities are endless!

Visit www.meritalia.it to see the Colorado line and other styles from this Italian designer. Click on the showrooms page to view the fabulous vignettes in their St Petersburg and Milan storefronts. I’m positive it’s way out of my price range, but even so – the design is truly inspiring.
